Fiery Darts

We know that the devil is trying to destroy us and one of his tools, according to the Bible, is the “fiery dart.” Have you ever had to deal with the “fiery darts?”  I have found a way to reduce their frequency and, amazingly, even benefit from them. Today, I will share this technique with you.

First of all we need to define what the “fiery darts” are: they are anything that discourages or distracts us in our walk with God, anything that destroys what we have (including material possessions), or anything that entices us to curse God. This definition of “fiery darts” is based on the first couple of chapters of the book of Job. Some specific, modern-day examples are: a flat tire on your car; something said to you that is unkind; a problem in your church or home group; or a sickness in your family.

These things happen to everyone. They are part of life. When we experience these things, the enemy is hoping that we react in a negative manner. For instance, if we have a flat tire, we could curse God. If someone says an unkind word to us, we could hate them. If we have a problem in our church, we could stop going. If we, or a family member have a sickness, we could be discouraged and lose our faith. These “fiery darts” can result in a loss of faith and separation from God.

Think of it this way. Satan and his host are shooting these darts at us with intensity and frequency to do the maximum damage. They have been doing this since the original sin in the Garden of Eden. They know what they are doing and have a very good success rate. However, we find in the Bible a tool to counter these “fiery darts.” The Bible says that we need to take up the “shield of faith.” But, how do we do that?  Here is a practical way of taking up the “shield of faith” that I have used; and, when employed, the darts decline drastically: Every time you get a dart, pray that God will use the dart for good in your life and those around you. When the enemy knows that every dart he fires will be used for good, he stops firing them. The enemy’s job is to destroy, not to do good, so he stops firing the darts.  So, this is a simple, effective thing you can do. Also, consider writing each event in a book as an eternal testimony of your faith. Do you see it? This is employing the “shield of faith” in your life; and we know that our faith is very pleasing to God.

Ephesians 6:16  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;

So, will this totally eliminate darts? No. The devil will quit firing the darts, but God will intervene and compel the enemy to fire a few from time to time. God knows that we need a few darts so we have the opportunity to exercise our faith. Please read the early part of the book of Job and also the following scripture:

Isaiah 45:7  I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things.

I have used this concept for many years and attest to the fact that it works. I realize now that I need a few darts once in a while; they build faith and character. I thank God for His entire creation: physical and spiritual.

A Consuming Fire

Life is interesting. But what is the purpose? How does it work? And, there is the age-old question: why do we have to live by faith? It would be so simple if God would appear and tell us clearly what He expects and what is important to Him. One of the foremost atheists of our time, when being asked, “what would you say to God if you found out that He did, in fact, exist?” responded, “I would ask Him why He has been so elusive?” This is a common question, so let’s see if we can answer it.

All doctrine has its roots in the early chapters of the book of Genesis: Man sinned and was separated from God. Immediately, God set into place a way of getting man back; He wanted man to be redeemed; and, to accomplish this, He gave man the written word: the Bible. Later, He gave us the living word, Jesus in the flesh. The written word and the living word are one in the same, and our salvation.

Now, we need to look at things from God’s point of view. He is very anxious to get us back. He is focused and intense. He knows we are carnal and sinners and that if He were to be physically near us, we would be consumed by His presence. Please read:

Deuteronomy 4:24
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Psalms 68:2  As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

Psalms 97:5  The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth

Isaiah 64:2  As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!

In His presence we would surely die. Therefore, He has given us protection: faith. Faith is a protective shield for us. We think of it as a protection against our enemies, which it is; but, it is also our protection against the physical presence of God Almighty.

This is precisely why Jesus was sent to us. He, also known as the Word of God, took on a mortal body and lived with us for 33 years. He was without sin, like an unblemished lamb. The Lamb of God was sacrificed to pay for our sins. He was killed and sent to the innermost parts of the Earth. We aren’t sure all He did there, but we know that the result is that if we believe on Him (Jesus), we receive His spotlessness and are adorned by His “robe of righteousness.” This allows us to be in God’s presence forever. In the mean time, faith is an opportunity to be pleasing to God: according to the Bible, it is the only way we can be pleasing to God.

Hebrews 11:6  And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Rejoice that we have protection and all the other benefits of faith. Every little detail in the creation is for our benefit.

To do: Consider these things and when someone asks you, “why do we have to live by faith?” you have an answer: “It is for protection and an opportunity.”

A World of Violence (BL14)

How many humans and animals die each year? How many of them die in a violent manner?  Why would God allow all of this to happen? Is this His will?

Violence is everywhere. Humans killing each other or killing animals and animals killing each other or humans. Why would God create such a violent world? Let’s go back to Genesis for the truth concerning creation. In the beginning God created all things and He said that the creation was “very good.” He also said that He created fruit, seeds, and green herbs as meat to eat, for both humans and animals; He did not want man or animals killing anything. Please read:

Genesis 1:29  And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Genesis 1:30  And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Genesis 1:31  And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.(KJV)
According to these  scriptures, He did not want us to kill anything: even plants or insects. The plants freely gave their fruit, seeds, and leaves, but not their lives. His original plan was for no death, at all. He wanted the lion and lamb to lie down together in safety. Before the first sin, there was no killing, no death, and no fear. God loves life, peace, and harmony, not death.

When Adam and Eve committed the original sin, the earth, and everything in it, started a downward spiral; Everything went from “very good” to “cursed.” The earth became polluted with sin and death. There was violence everywhere. Man suffered, animals suffered, plants suffered, and God suffered. God said that He was sorry He made man.

God willed that man and animals live together in complete harmony with each other and with Him. He wanted children to be able to play with the tigers cubs, and bears, and dinosaurs. He wanted man to be able to walk anywhere on the earth without fear; to enjoy the magnificent creation; and behold its beauty. He wanted the sparrow to be able to sing, and chatter, and not fall. He wanted us to be free from jealousy, hate, and all of the other sins; and to experience pure love for God and each other.

The good news is that we have a Redeemer, who will come for us and restore the world to its original magnificence and there will be freedom from violence and death. Jesus died a violent death to pay the price for sin. The Bible says that one day death will be cast into the lake of fire. He can do it and He is the only one with the power and authority to do it. Let us rejoice.

Isaiah 25:8  He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces . . . .

To do: Tell your children, or a friend, about God’s original plan and how He will restore the earth to its intended glory – soon.

They Listen and Deserve the Truth (BL-12)

Your children are being launched into a world filled with lies. Are you providing your children truth?

In earlier teaching, we have presented the Biblical concept of a “measure of faith,” and that little children have this “measure of faith” in a pure form, pure in that it hasn’t been polluted by the deceptions of this world. Please remember this when you talk with your children. What a waste to encourage them to invest this precious “measure of faith” in lies such as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the tooth fairy. When they find out that Santa Claus does not exist, they will assume you lied to them about many other subjects, such as Jesus.
Your children, when young,  believe what you tell them. If you tell them there is a pink elephant dancing in a tutu just outside the window, they will immediately go to the window and look for the pink, dancing elephant.

Your children will continue to listen to you as long as you are honest with them and a source of truth. My advice is to never lie to them. If you don’t lie to  them, they will always come to you for truth. Sometimes the truth is “I don’t know,” but offer to learn with them and find the truth – together.

When your children come to you and want to talk, turn off the TV, put down the book, or turn away from the computer. The conversations with your children are eternally rewarding. The relationship you build with your children in the early years will build a foundation for later years. If they know you are a source of truth and honesty, they will always come to you.

There are times when you will think your children are hopeless and you will have the tendency to give up on them; but, by faith, continue to tell them truth and love them. You will see later that they did listen.

To Do: Your children will be exposed to many lies from: friends, television, the internet, and school. Concerning school, show interest in their classes and study with them – not only to help them, but also to know what they are being taught. When you think a text book is wrong (e.g. concerning creation and evolution), tell them what you think; teach them what the Bible says and show them how to learn. They will love this. Teach them that Jesus is “Truth” and they should never fear truth. Also, teach them that it is the job of the Holy Spirit to teach us “all things.”

John 14:26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things…(Jesus)

Your children will appreciate knowing these things and love learning with you. Also, teach them about God’s precious gift: the “measure of faith” (Romans 12:3).”

If you have already raised your children and haven’t used these principles, but wish you had, tell God, reason together, and ask Him to use the past for good. He is the creator of all things and together you and He can make it right.

Conquering the Roman Empire

Do you have a major problem in your life: something really big, something that looks impossible to overcome, or something that has you living in fear? Or, maybe it is someone, someone you are afraid of, someone who is bullying you, or someone who is very powerful and has control of your life and future. Have you tried God’s principles, or are you using worldly wisdom. We can learn much from those who conquered the Roman Empire.

At the time of Jesus, the Roman Empire was in power and controlled much of the known world. It was a repressive, brutal regime. When Jesus was asked about paying taxes to Rome, He responded by saying, “Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and onto God what is God’s.”  Jesus also gave the Sermon on the Mount which promoted ideas of “turning the other cheek” and “loving your enemy.” These teachings were at enmity with worldly wisdom.

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, Christians emerged, throughout the Roman Empire. The Roman emperors, such as Nero, considered Christians as a threat and killed them in the arena, used them as human torches, and persecuted them every way imaginable. These early Christians had a problem that needed to be overcome. They lived in fear every day, not knowing what path to take. This may be similar to your situation, although, hopefully, your situation isn’t as severe.

Paul wrote a letter to the Roman Christians, knowing their plight, which encouraged them to use the principles that Jesus taught. This letter is in the Bible (Romans chapter 13), and gives us the principles used to conquer the Roman Empire. History tells us that the early Christians used the principles in the Bible (Romans chapter 13): they were law abiding, paid their taxes, posed no threat of insurrection; loved even their enemies; and their interests were in a kingdom that was not of the Roman world.

These ideas prevailed and finally in 311 A.D, emperor  Galerius granted Christians the right to practice their religion without fear of retribution. In 313 A.D. Emperor Constantine expanded Christian rights and in a later year, Constantine professed that he was a Christian. The Roman Empire was conquered; it was transformed, from oppressor to promoter of the Christian faith; and today the Roman Catholic Church has approximately 1 billion adherents – it’s amazing what a few words from Jesus and one letter from a believer can do.

What would have happened if the Roman Christians would have used worldly ways to solve their problems? Have you tried solving your problems by using worldly wisdom? Maybe it is time to use God’s wisdom. Dwell in God’s word and in His presence, you will know truth and truth will set you free.

Suggestion: Teach your children early about the principles of God. Encourage them to ask God to help them with their problems.
